For anyone who saw the game on Sunday against Iceland would have noticed a few things:
First, Iceland sucks. No ball movement, just kicking it out of danger and the US comes right back down their throats. But for a country which is about the size of Kentucky, I wonder what you could really be expecting out of them. Not to mention the US is pretty good.
Second, the score ended 2-1 because Iceland couldn't hold the tie in the 88th minute, pretty disappointing...if you are rooting for Iceland.
Third, I don't know how anyone who saw that game doesn't instantly become an Icelandic fan. Their goalkeeper Thora Helgadottir was the show. She stole the spotlight. Made 14 saves, most of them amazing, and basically the game was the Thora show. Player of the match, even though Wambach scored 2 goals, but unforutnately the Iceland coach took Thora out in the 80th minute, because I'm sure she could have made that last save to preserve the tie.
Here is where I get a bit biased. I played with Thora for 2 years at Duke, and I can say from personal experience that she is one of the best, if not the best keeper in the world. My assistant coach, Carla Overbeck(captain of the national team, recently inducted into Soccer Hall of Fame, badass), definitely stated that numerous times.
So, Congrats Thora for tearing it up again. I'm sorry you guys didn't tie the US, but you won over tons of US fans. Truely beautiful to watch. And the US was coming at you the whole time. (Not to mention she can punt 75 yards...not too shabby either).
