Boca Juniors and River Plate – Super Classico
The rivalry between these two clubs is perhaps on of the greatest in sports. A recent article in Fifa.com suggests that the two clubs ‘needed and need one another’ to exsist at the highest level. Both teams have city, country and international fame. However, both teams develop talent locally and compete for fan allegiance. This drives another sub plot and rivalry from the time youth players begin to kick a ball.
I’d love to see MLS support 3 to 4 inter city rivalries. Los Angeles has currently the only true must see MLS rivalry. These teams consistently sell-out and provide fans with a great match. I’ve attended every one and can assure you the environment cannot be duplicated.
New York city needs to have at least 2 clubs. The Red Bulls need a rival like the Notorious B.I.G. needed Tupac. Rivalries are a must. Inter city rivalries are the easiest way to build a soccer community at a professional level. Chicago would be an ideal city to build another Rivalry. Battle of the Bay between an Oakland team and San Francisco team would be another ideal scenario.
I also think Los Angles could have at least 2 more professional teams. An Orange County and San Fernando Valley team would be welcomed. These teams would build intense rivalries that would be a better impact to soccer than the MLS famed ‘soccer specific stadiums’ could ever inspire.
